• Wallaroo: Homage to Jeffrey Smart

On a visit to Wallaroo on Yorke Peninsula in South Australia, I instantly recognised the chimney stack depicted in Jeffrey Smart’s 1951 painting Wallaroo, only now set in a landscape more reminiscent of late Jeffrey Smart paintings. In the centre of town, I came across a man operating the machine that I have depicted–something that also could come straight out of Smart’s later work. Together, they suggested a reworking of the 1951 painting, in which its basic elements are reconfigured as gestures to his later work.
